Roatán Through My Lens: Turning the Island I Call Home Into Art

Most people know Catch My Drift Photography for photographing families, couples, proposals, elopements, weddings, and all of the incredible people who come to Roatán.

But some of my favorite photographs don’t have a single person in them.

They’re simply Roatán.

The turquoise water. The docks stretching into the Caribbean. Boats floating offshore. Palm trees leaning toward the sea. The little details you pass every day without realizing how beautiful they are. And, of course, those ridiculous Roatán sunsets that somehow never look exactly the same twice.

Over time, photographing the island has become another part of my work—and one that means a lot to me.

Photographing the Roatán I See

There are thousands of beautiful photographs of Roatán online, but when I’m out with my camera, I’m not trying to create another postcard.

I’m looking for the Roatán that catches my eye.

Sometimes it’s a huge landscape with every shade of Caribbean blue imaginable. Other times it’s something incredibly simple—a boat, a dock, a palm tree, a reflection on the water, or the way the light hits a familiar part of the island for just a few minutes.

That’s one of the things I love most about landscape photography. Two photographers can stand in exactly the same place and create completely different photographs.

The camera matters, but the person behind it matters more.

There Is So Much More to Roatán Than One Beach

West Bay is famous for a reason. The water and beach can be absolutely incredible, and I’ve photographed some beautiful landscapes there.

But Roatán is so much more than West Bay.

Drive across the island and everything changes. There are rocky shorelines, lush jungle, quiet stretches of sand, colorful communities, docks, mangroves, dramatic skies and little pieces of island life everywhere.

Some locations are instantly recognizable.

Others might make you ask, “Where on Roatán is THAT?”

Those are some of my favorites.

Chasing Light Around the Island

Landscape photography has also made me pay attention to light in an entirely different way.

A location that looks completely ordinary at noon can be unbelievable an hour before sunset. Clouds can turn what looked like a disappointing evening into one of the best photographs I’ve taken.

And living on an island means the weather can change its mind about six times while you’re waiting.

I’ve learned that sometimes you go out specifically looking for a photograph and come home with nothing.

Then another day, you’re driving somewhere completely unrelated, see the light doing something amazing and suddenly you’re pulling over because I NEED MY CAMERA.

Those unplanned photographs are often the ones I love the most.

Creating Roatán Wall Art

Eventually I realized I didn’t want these photographs to live only on my computer, website, or social media.

I wanted to print them.

There is something completely different about seeing a photograph become a physical piece of art. The details come alive. The colors feel different. And suddenly a photograph I took standing somewhere on this little Caribbean island is hanging on someone’s wall.

My Roatán landscape photography is now available as wall art and prints, with options for different sizes and finishes.

For people who live here, it’s a way to put a piece of the island they love inside their home.

For visitors, it’s something they can take home that actually came from Roatán—not just another souvenir.

A Piece of Roatán That Doesn’t Fit in a Suitcase

That’s probably my favorite way to think about these photographs.

Roatán is a place people become attached to.

Maybe you got married here. Maybe your family comes every year. Maybe you discovered the island on a cruise and immediately knew you needed to come back. Maybe you’ve lived here for years. Or maybe Roatán simply became one of those places you never quite stopped thinking about after you left.

A photograph can bring you right back.

You see that water hanging on your wall and suddenly you remember how warm it was, what the breeze felt like, or exactly what it felt like watching the sun disappear into the Caribbean.

That’s what I want my Roatán photography to do.

Roatán, Honduras — As I See It

I’m constantly adding to this collection because this island never really gives me the same photograph twice.

Different weather. Different seasons. Different light. Different water.

Same beautiful Roatán.

So while I’ll always love photographing the people who come here, you’ll also find me wandering around the island with my Sony, stopping on the side of the road, launching my drone, waiting for the right light, and probably taking way too many pictures of the Caribbean.

Because sometimes Roatán doesn’t need anyone standing in front of it.

It’s already the subject.
